Their presence tells of a tumultuous past, one that often reflects ambitions, contested lands and feuding dynasties. And when so many occur in just one territory, it is clear that that particular piece of land must have been of great importance to justify such a highly visible deployment of forces.

Garda Trentino is no exception: this region overlooking the lake has since time immemorial been a crossroads for merchants, pilgrims and armies, and has for centuries been the scene of battles that have seen Italian dominions, republics and even empires take sides.

Today, the terrible clamour of the battles may have ceased, but the castles (or what remains of them) continue to exert a magnetic fascination, recounting their stories to those who know how to listen.

Penede Castle

When the past resurfaces

Since 2019, the ruins dominating the village of Nago have been the subject of a series of excavations promoted and directed by Professor Emanuele Vaccaro of the University of Trento, in collaboration with the Autonomous Province of Trento and the municipality of Nago Torbole. The work is gradually revealing a vast settlement at the foot of the visible remains of the fortress that was inhabited until the 4th century A.D.: the aim is for it to become an archaeological park that will be accessible to all.

Stenico Castle

Guardian of the past

Stenico Castle is inextricably linked to the history of the prince-bishops of Trento, who gained ownership of the structure in the 13th century. Since then it has undergone continual extension and remodelling, transforming the fortress into a comfortable and elegant residence. Today the rooms of the castle house fine furniture, valuable paintings, weapons and firearms, as well as antique everyday items from the collections of Buonconsiglio Castle.

Arco Castle

An icon above the Sarca Valley

With its unmistakable profile, Arco Castle dominates the entire Lower Sarca region. Perched on a cliff overlooking the town, it is a favourite destination for those seeking a leisurely stroll or who wish to explore its mighty ruins. In recent years, however, the foot of the castle has become a venue for open-air festivals, with a busy programme of concerts and shows to enliven the summer evenings.  (Info: gardatrentino.it/events)
