THE HISTORIC FACES OF DRO AND DRENA

A blend of nature, history and culture

One of the oldest municipalities in the Sarca Valley, Dro, lies between the three enchanting lakes of the Garda Trentino region – Lake Garda, Lake Cavedine and Lake Toblino. Slightly higher is Drena, a mountain village of prehistoric origin, shaped by Roman and Medieval influences.

Architectural and cultural attractions, such as historic gates carved of stone, towers, arches and curious, winding alleyways all bear witness to the ancient origins of these two villages. Of particular interest are Castel Drena with its crenellated tower, standing on a hill, the former church of the Saints Sisinios, Martirio and Alexander, the Guaita Tower in the hamlet of Pietramurata, the Roman bridge of Ceniga or the Church of Sant’Abbondio. This is where, each year, the inhabitants of the village solemnly renew the vow made in 1630 in gratitude for their escape from the deathly embrace of the plague.

Around Dro, conversely, extend vineyards and the green orchards that produce the susine plums of Dro, a fruity delicacy with protected geographical origin, as well as the Vino Santo Trentino DOC with its fragrant character.

Dro also has an artistic heritage: the historic hydropower station of Fies, dating from 1911 and built in Habsburg style, is now a centre for the acquisition and production of contemporary art.

Dro is thus a regular destination for those attracted by its fascinatingly perfect blend of nature, history and culture. Despite the small area that they occupy, Drena and Dro can boast numerous historic and natural attractions, one example being the so-called “marocche”, rock layers created by landslides during the last Ice Age. The barren landscape is reminiscent of the moon; a large network of paths lets you explore the past, including the traces of two different dinosaur species – one a plant-eater, the other a carnivore, both over six metres long.

For a full taste of the area, don’t miss the “marroni di Drena”. These famous chestnuts come from 1000-year-old trees in the woods around the village.

Nearby too is the village of Braila, a tiny cultural attraction with just ten inhabitants living in its fascinating terraced stone houses.

For active visitors, however, a special highlight is the “Rio Sallagoni”, the via ferrata to Drena Castle. The route runs up a gorge to the castle, crossing overhanging sections that offer breathtaking views of the valley below, with a Tibetan bridge that passes by a lovely waterfall.

Both Dro and Drena are packed full of stories and histories, so don’t forget your camera!
