Bernardo Gigli was born in Bezzecca in 1726 into a well-to-do farming family. From a young age, he stood out for his extraordinary height, reaching around 2.60 metres and earning the nickname Popo de Bezeca.
After working as a labourer in various mountain areas, in 1745 he was noticed by the tightrope walker Giambattista Perghem, who invited him to join travelling performances. Thanks to his imposing stature, Gigli became a true attraction and even performed in front of important European rulers, including Louis XV of France and Catherine II of Russia. After Perghem’s death, he continued his career on his own, enjoying great success also thanks to his distinctive Turkish-inspired costumes.
In 1768 he returned to Bezzecca and used part of the fortune he had earned to help the local community. He purchased land for the benefit of the inhabitants and provided financial support to poorer families.
