Visitate il Garda!
Graphics and promotion from the Belle Époque to modern tourism
For generations of travellers, the first encounter with Lake Garda did not take place along its shores, but through an image.
Thanks to the extraordinary combination of Alpine landscapes and Mediterranean atmospheres, the lake has exerted a unique fascination on travellers, artists and writers for centuries.
Posters, postcards and other promotional materials have accompanied this process, helping to shape the very identity of the lake.
By tracing the evolution of graphic design and tourism communication, the exhibition shows how the types of visitors, ways of travelling and the image of Lake Garda itself have changed over time.
From an unexpected Mediterranean destination to the rise of modern tourism, the more than one hundred objects on display illustrate not only how Lake Garda became one of Europe’s most recognisable tourist destinations, but also how society, transport and lifestyles evolved throughout the 20th century.
