This small lake, cradled by mountains at 570 metres above sea level, is famous for its changing colours – from turquoise to emerald, depending on the season. Some call it the "blue lake," but for locals, it's simply the "laghet" – a fond nickname that shows just how deeply attached they are to this peaceful spot.
Lake Tenno was likely formed between the 11th and 12th centuries by a massive landslide that blocked the Rio Secco stream. Water gradually filled the new basin, creating the lake. According to local legend, the landslide struck at midday, burying a nearby village. The survivors founded a new settlement on the opposite side of the valley and named it Pranzo – to remember the fatal hour. In fact, "pranzo" means "lunch" in Italian.
Today, Lake Tenno is a beloved destination all year round.
Although modest in size (roughly 750 metres long, 400 metres wide, and up to 47 metres deep), the lake boasts several unique features:
To protect all this, the Lake Tenno Local Nature Reserve was created.
Lake Tenno is a place to enjoy in every season:
With its vivid colours, Lake Tenno is a stunning sight in every season. But it's also a delicate ecosystem. That's why the local community chose to establish a nature reserve – and why we need your help too.
Dogs are welcome, but must stay on the upper part of the "Giro del Lago" path. Always keep them on a lead and out of the water.
Visitors with disabilities can request a special permit to drive to the car park near the lakeside kiosk (apply to the Comune di Tenno / Municipality of Tenno at info@comune.tenno.tn.it).
From there, wheelchair users can follow the forest road towards Ballino for a scenic view of the lake. Please note, however, that the beach is rocky and not wheelchair accessible.
It was born from a local initiative aimed at promoting responsible tourism and enriching the visitor experience.
The Blue Flag is an international award recognising beaches, marinas and lakefronts with high standards of water quality, services, safety and environmental care. In Garda Trentino, three lakes have earned the Blue Flag: Tenno, Lamar and Terlago.
