Lívia Mattos
Accordionist, singer and composer from Bahia, Lívia Mattos belongs to a generation of Brazilian musicians with a deep knowledge of tradition, yet no desire to be confined by it. Her musical world begins with forró, choro and frevo and opens up to improvisation, experimentation with sound and influences gathered over years of travelling and touring.
In her new album Verve, Brazil enters into dialogue with other musical geographies. Indian singer and flautist Varijashree Venugopal and Senegalese singer and kora player Senny Camara are guests on a project built around the idea of bringing different roots together without losing their individual character.
At its heart is the accordion, an instrument historically associated in Brazil with a predominantly male musical world, which Mattos transforms into a space for freedom, risk and play. Alongside her, tuba, euphonium, drums and percussion create rhythmic, fluid and unpredictable music, exploring Brazilian popular culture with a distinctly contemporary curiosity.
