Along the path between Canale and Calvola, in the area known as Strambevie, four bronze figures seem to be still engaged in discussion.
The Vicinia Monument stands on the very spot where the assembly of the Vicinia Granda of Ville del Monte once took place.
The Vicinia was an early form of local self-government: an organisation made up of heads of families from different villages, responsible for managing shared land and community assets.
It developed in the Middle Ages, during a time of major change, when epidemics left many properties without owners and required collective management.
The monument, created in the 1980s by sculptor Livio Tasin, captures this moment of discussion between the communities of Canale, Calvola, Pastoedo and Sant’Antonio.
Nearby, a commemorative plaque lists the original families, and a decorated fountain by Gianni Longinotti recalls the traditional fountains of the village.
A short stop that offers insight into how local communities organised themselves and shaped the landscape together.
