At the Lake Ledro Pile-Dwelling Museum, you step into the daily life of a Bronze Age village.
Through original remains, artefacts, reconstructions and dwellings, you can discover how people lived on the shores of the lake 4,000 years ago, between 2200 and 1350 BC.
Founded in the 1970s and renovated in 2019, the museum is now a bright and welcoming space designed to engage visitors of all ages with prehistory through stories of objects, tools, journeys and everyday life.
Inside the museum, part of this story is preserved and brought to life. You can enter reconstructed huts, observe artefacts recovered from the lake and learn how people built their homes, cooked, dressed, worked and lived by the water. The discoveries that emerged from the lake tell the story of a community that lived here 4,000 years ago.
The Lake Ledro Pile-Dwelling Museum is a local branch of MUSE – Trento Science Museum.
Everything began with an extraordinary discovery: in 1929, when the lake level was lowered during the construction of the Riva del Garda hydroelectric power plant, the remains of the Ledro pile dwellings reappeared after thousands of years. More than 12,000 wooden piles emerged along the southern shore of the lake, revealing one of the most important prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements in Europe. The piles can still be seen today along the lakeshore.
Since 2011, the Ledro pile-dwelling site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps", together with other archaeological sites across the Alpine region.
During summer, the museum comes alive with Palafittando, a programme of workshops, guided visits and events for all ages designed to explore prehistory in an engaging and enjoyable way.
The museum is also part of ReLED, the museum network of the Ledro Valley.
