In the centre of Calavino, in the Valle dei Laghi, the church reflects centuries of history.
Originally the parish church of the Val di Cavedine, it is first documented in 1236, when it was rebuilt in Romanesque style, replacing an earlier wooden structure.
In the 16th century, the Madruzzo family promoted a major expansion. From this period comes the side chapel dedicated to the family, decorated with a 1549 fresco portraying ten members of the dynasty, painted by an artist from Titian’s circle. Inside, there is also an altarpiece attributed to the Vicenza painter Marcello Fogolino.
In the 18th century, the Chapel of the Rosary was added, featuring frescoes of the Fifteen Mysteries. On the façade, a large 15th-century fresco of Saint Christopher, covered for centuries, was brought back to light during restoration works in the 1970s.
A layered building where each period is still visible, making it a worthwhile stop to explore its history in detail.
