The archaeological site of San Martino owes its origins to the elevated and strategic position of the area. Studies conducted by archaeologists have brought to light what was initially a probable votive place of worship, already in use during the Iron Age, from the 5th to 1st century BC. In the subsequent Roman period, the sanctuary's function was reinforced with the construction of more complex structures, continuing until the end of the 3rd century AD. Later, residential buildings were constructed on top of these structures, which appear to be contemporary with the remains of a fortified wall, thus transforming the site into a fortified settlement. On a lower terrace, excavations revealed an early medieval settlement with a small church, probably from the Lombard or Carolingian period, dated approximately to the 8th–9th century AD.
