A weekend dedicated to learning about local olive oil traditions

It’s always olive oil hour in Garda Trentino. Why not spend your Weekend learning about, chatting about, and sampling local produce? Enjoy exquisite extra virgin olive oil produced in Garda Trentino as part of a guided tour of seven local oil mills.

This occasion is the perfect opportunity to wander among olive groves, rummage through wicker baskets, dip a chunk of bread in delicious olive oil, try intriguing new flavour combos made with local produce, and learn all about the excellent local brands that have been awarded the coveted Garda Trentino DOP certification. Learn from the very people behind olive-growing traditions in Alto Garda. People who truly believe that time can stopped in a bottle.

Local restaurants will be serving themed dishes over the course of the weekend.

An age-old tradition

Garda Trentino is home to more than 100,000 olive trees on 500 hectares of land. These stats should give you some insight into the local olive-growing community, which is the most northerly community of its kind. The land to the north of Lake Garda offers the perfect microclimate for producing first-rate olive oil. Olive growing is an art with distant roots that can be traced back to ancient times and features in Virgil’s poems and the works of Gabriele D'Annunzio. The local area, which boasts a Mediterranean climate despite bordering the Alps, has a very impressive history. Local traditions are passed down from harvest to harvest, and from pruning to pressing.

Liquid green gold that’s good for the heart

Olive trees have been grown on the terraces of Alto Garda for centuries, in full respect of nature. One of Garda Trentino's most prized native species is the Casaliva olive. It produces a golden-green extra virgin olive oil with notes of green almond, artichoke, and wild herb. Extra virgin olive oil is rich in polyphenols, monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamins A and E, which help keep bones strong and skin healthy. It also prevents the onset of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, and its properties make it an excellent condiment. It’s even recommended by nutritionists for daily enjoyment.
