Safety Tips

1. Choose routes according to your physical and technical abilities, researching the area to visit, trail usability, and equipping yourself with an adequate hiking map.
2. Provide clothing and equipment suitable to the effort and length of the hike and carry in your backpack what is necessary for possible emergencies and a first aid kit.
3. It is advisable not to undertake a mountain hike alone. In any case, tell someone the itinerary you plan to follow, notifying them of your return.
4. Check the weather forecast and constantly observe the weather development.
5. When in doubt, turn back. Sometimes it is better to give up rather than find yourself in difficulty due to bad weather or having tackled difficulties higher than your strength, abilities, or equipment.
6. Avoid unnecessarily leaving the trail and taking shortcuts.
7. All the listed routes develop in a natural environment. Walking them means accepting the risk of practicing a sport in nature.

Leaving the car at Ballino, follow the SAT 406 trail towards Loc. Castìl, where there are some houses scattered around a green hollow, overlooking the overhanging rocks of Monte Cogorna and the dreadful Val d'Inferni with the Dòss della Torta. Continue following the signs through a beech and conifer forest, and after 30 minutes, you arrive in front of a large rock boulder. Turning right, you pass the boulder and after a steep but short climb, the Grotta Camerona appears before your eyes. The cave is gigantic, measuring 20 m wide and 12 m high.
After visiting the cave, descend back the same way to the locality Castil. For those who wish, continuing south it is possible to reach the locality “Laghisòi” and, after a short climb, descend towards Lake Tenno: 720 m long, 270 m wide and more than 50 m deep, with its clear turquoise waters, it occupies a green basin surrounded by forest.
Continue along the road that skirts the lake from above, after a short cobbled downhill stretch, you can see the hamlets of Ville del Monte and Canale di Tenno, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy. At the crossroads, follow the left road and in a few minutes arrive at the medieval village of Canale. After visiting the village, return to Ballino by the same road or using public transport from Ville del Monte.

Ballino is served by the extra-urban bus line 211 (Riva del Garda - Tenno - Fiavè - Ponte Arche).

Mountain hikes require specific clothing and equipment. Even for relatively short and easy outings, it is always better to be well equipped to avoid unpleasant surprises and to face unforeseen events such as, for example, a sudden storm or a drop in energy.

What to bring for a mountain trekking?

In the backpack (for a day hike it is usually recommended 25/30L) it is good to bring: 

• water bottle (1L)
• snacks (for example, dried fruit or chocolate)
• first aid kit
• windbreaker jacket
• a fleece top
• spare T-shirt and socks (preferably in a plastic bag)
• worn or at least carried in the backpack a pair of long pants
• hat
• sunscreen
• sunglasses
• gloves
• whistle to be found in case of emergency

Wear footwear suitable for the route and the season. The trail surface can be uneven or rough and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. A grassy slope, a rock slab or a steep path, if wet, can become dangerous without adequate footwear.
