The second stage of the Low Loop closes the loop and returns to the starting point, Riva del Garda, exploring the entire eastern side of Garda Trentino.
Even on the second stage, the route mostly winds along paths that today are secondary but were once the main communication routes of Garda Trentino. These are indeed historic routes, walked for centuries and, sometimes, the setting of legendary events such as the Strada di Santa Lucia. It was through here in the 15th century that the Venetians passed to reach the lake with their galleys, an unprecedented military feat.
Descending from Vastrè towards San Martino, you cross the area of the Bosco Caproni. In this area, there used to be oolite quarries, a precious stone used in construction but also to create decorative sculptures, which have now become rock climbing gyms appreciated by climbers worldwide. Bosco Caproni is named after the family of Gianni Caproni, a pioneer of aeronautics who was born here in 1886.
The route touches the Belvedere di Nago: stop here and admire the view that opens here over the entire northern part of Lake Garda.
The Low Loop route intersects with some of the itineraries from the "Hidden Treasures" series, recommended for those who want to deepen their knowledge of Garda Trentino’s history, literary inspirations, and art. For example, you can retrace the steps of Goethe who narrated his stay in Torbole in his Italian Journey. Or walk along a stretch of the "Blue Line", the last defensive line built at the foot of the Italian Alps by German forces in 1944-45. Routes with descriptions and free GPX tracks are available here.

From the bridge over the Sarca River, follow the cycle-pedestrian path along the river northwards until reaching the Moletta locality near a bike grill. Leave the cycle-pedestrian path to enter the village on the right and reach the state road: on the opposite side, take the SAT trail 667 "della Maestra" which climbs in a zigzag along a small road up the Vastrè promontory to Case Caproni.
At the top of the promontory, it is possible, with a short detour to the right, to visit the system of trenches dating back to the First World War, recently brought to light. From Case Caproni, the path goes into the Oolite Caves: now descend southwards, sometimes entering the deep cavities left by the quarrying activity. Along the large overhangs, it is possible to see some climbers scaling some of the most difficult walls in the world. The trail ends at a hairpin bend at the foot of one of the most famous climbing cliffs of Garda Trentino, the Policromuro di Massone.
Now descend along the paved road amid olive trees, pass a crossroads on the right, and continue straight until you reach a road climbing to the left, which, through the olive grove, reaches the village of Massone from the east. Then take a narrow paved road to the left between stone walls, which you immediately leave by taking an unpaved road to the left. First, you skirt the slopes of the ridge descending from Monte Stivo, then cross its cone cultivated with vineyards and olive groves. Reaching the paved road near the Capitello delle Quattro Facce, descend towards the village of Bolognano, always keeping right and passing near the cemetery and the church of San Floriano. Reach and cross the centre of the village southwards to reach Vignole and cross the state road near the Everest hotel.
Just beyond, near the small cemetery, turn right and cross the Pratosaiano plain cultivated with orchards along the paved road. Continue always on the main road heading south (Lake Garda). After a crossroads, 300 meters later, take an unpaved road to the left and, after a small bridge, merge onto a parallel road that soon turns into an unpaved track and, cutting the slope overlooking the last stretch of the Sarca's course, climbs towards the village of Nago.
The unpaved road ends near the car park close to the glacial wells called Marmitte dei Giganti. On the opposite side, near a kiosk, begins the unpaved road that leads to the roundabout at the start of the village of Nago. Climb a short staircase on the right and then, continuing to the right, reach the ruins of Castel Penede. From here, return towards the village centre on the opposite side of the ascent and, still keeping right, reach a crossroads. Turning right leads you to the ancient Strada di Santa Lucia that takes you to Torbole, from where, following the cycle-pedestrian path along the lake, you return to Riva del Garda.
The route is marked with signs reading "GardaTrek Low Loop".

Mountain excursions require specific clothing and equipment. Even for relatively short and easy outings, it is always better to be well equipped to avoid unpleasant surprises and face unforeseen events such as a sudden storm or a drop in energy.
What to bring for mountain trekking?
In your backpack (for a day hike usually recommended 25/30L) it is good to bring:
Wear suitable footwear for the path and season. The trail surface may be uneven or broken and a pair of sturdy boots will protect you from sprains. A grassy slope, a rock slab, or a steep path, if wet, can become dangerous without proper footwear.
Finally... don't forget your camera! It will be useful to capture the hike and the countless breathtaking views Garda Trentino hides around every corner. If you want to share your memories with us, you can use the hashtag #GardaTrentino
The emergency number is 112.
Strada della Porcilaia is closed for works from August 2024 until September 2025
