Difficulty: T (tourist)
Start from Comano Paese. After parking the vehicle near the church, pass the hotel "La Panoramica" and reach the area equipped for the Alpini festivals. At the Cross continue straight on a flat road and enter the forest interspersed with meadows until the fork where the SAT 411 sign indicates the "Garda - Brenta" route to Ponte Balandin on the left and on the right the path to Passo della Morte. In front is a basin of meadows descending towards the Sarca and above Banale, Monte Valandro and Cima Ghez. Continue right into the Scots pine and coppice forest, along a pleasant slight uphill path leading to the "Caputèl de le Anime" (Chapel of Souls). This chapel is said to have been built in the 17th century by the devotees of Comano to commemorate the Souls of Purgatory. It once contained a fresco depicting the "Madonna dell’Aiuto" and following recent restoration, it was decorated by Paolo Dalponte, a local artist, with a different subject. After a possible short break, continue crossing the steep slopes of the "Godesi" with on the left the dreadful valley and the Limarò Canyon. Upon reaching the first rocks, the path narrows, closed by rocks on the right and cliffs on the left protected by iron and wooden railings to avoid any danger. We are at the "Passo della Morte", the highest point of the route (843 m). Until a few centuries ago, this pass was the only transit way between the Outer Giudicarie and Trento and the name comes from an ancient legend according to which, at this point, Adalberto of Castel Toblino was treacherously killed by Graziadeo da Campo while heading to a romantic appointment with Ginevra, the beautiful lady of Castel Stenico.
Continue gently downhill along a path that at times takes your breath away for the horrid ravines below which you can see the State Road of Caffaro and even lower the Sarca River. Upon reaching the "Bivio del Casale" the SAT 427 sign points right to Capanna Don Zio and Monte Casale, while left to Sarche and Motte. Following this last indication, descend and after some hairpin bends you glimpse on the left the Forestry House. Entering the wide meadow you notice the "Malga-Maso Casale". You can continue descending on the SAT 427 path or on the dirt road left earlier; both routes lead to the "Hermitage" which has recently been restored. The Hermitage (452 m) is situated in a particularly panoramic and exposed spot. From here there is a beautiful view of the valley below, Monte Bondone with the summit "Cornét" and the "Piccolo Daìn". After the usual stop to admire the view and rest, return the same way. If you do not want to retrace the route, it is possible to descend to the nearby village of Sarche, from where you can return to Ponte Arche by public transport, though in this case it is advisable to leave the car at Ponte Arche and walk to Comano.
The Comano area is connected to other Garda Trentino centers by the extra-urban bus lines 211 (Riva del Garda - Tenno - Fiavè - Ponte Arche) and 201 (Trento - Ponte Arche - Campiglio – Tione). The connection between Ponte Arche and Stenico is served by line 208.
From Ponte Arche/Comano Terme continue towards Comano Paese (4 km). At the Church turn left to Loc. Panoramica.
Near the church of San Giacomo in Comano Paese or in front of the Panoramica Hotel.
Mountain hikes require specific clothing and equipment. Even for relatively short and easy outings, it is always better to be well equipped to avoid unpleasant surprises and to cope with unforeseen events such as a sudden storm or a drop in energy.
What to bring for a mountain trek?
In your backpack (for a typical day hike, a 25/30L backpack is recommended) it is good to carry:
Wear footwear suitable for the route and the season. The trail surface may be uneven or rough, and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. A grassy slope, a rock slab or a steep path, if wet, can become dangerous without appropriate footwear.
Finally... don’t forget your camera! It will be useful to capture the hike and the countless breathtaking views that Garda Trentino hides around every corner. If you want to share your memories with us you can use the hashtag #GardaTrentino
