La Rocca di Riva del Garda, sede del MAG

A majestic castle on the water 

The Rocca is the Castle of Riva del Garda, erected in the 12th century to defend the city. Thanks to its beautiful location, during the Renaissance it became a charming place to stay, enhanced by gardens and bright frescoed rooms. When the Austrian-Hungarian Empire came into power, the Rocca once again took up its military function and underwent a radical renovation that transformed it into barracks and a fortress, with a garrison that could easily monitor the centre and the portion of the lake in front of it.  
Today the Rocca hosts the MAG, the Museum of Upper Garda.  
The Museum’s collections contain evidence of the past in Garda Trentino, including the stele statues dating back to the Bronze Age found in Arco, some artefacts recovered from the excavations near the prehistoric settlements on stilts in Ledro and the findings discovered in the archaeological area of San Martino di Campi. 
The historical path then continues up to the 20th century, tracing the development of tourism in Upper Garda area and showing the events that marked the area between the two World Wars.  
Alongside the historical section, art lovers will find the interesting Pinacoteca, with a collection of works that show the peculiarity of the figurative production in the Garda area. 

The garden of the castle is always open, also outside the museum's opening hours.
