 Wellness Trekking: The Rain Cross

The cross at La Guarda on Monte San Martino has always been a pilgrimage destination for the local inhabitants; today, it is the finishing point of a trek suitable for everyone, rewarding participants with one of the most beautiful panoramas over the Comano area. La Guarda is a green plateau that opens up among the woods, dominated by the chapel-monument to the Holy Cross. According to legend, it was a local farmer who built the first wooden cross, to which various miraculous events and extraordinary deeds were attributed over time; it was then decided to transfer the cross to the current Church of Santa Croce. However, the cross mysteriously disappeared repeatedly from the building, only to reappear in its original location on the mountain, almost as if it had its own will not to leave that sacred site. Only with the construction of the chapel on the mountain in the 17th century did the cross finally find peace within the church. Despite this, in times of particular hardship or during solemn celebrations, such as jubilee years, the cross was still carried in procession to its original medieval site, testifying to the deep bond between the community and this symbol of faith and protection.
