Hidden Treasures - Itinerary Between Air and Rock

Under the rugged cliff of the castle, lies the town of Arco, rich in history and culture, a legacy from its very different eras. Once the stronghold of the counts of Arco, it reinvented itself as the "Kurort" of the high class of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As of late, Arco and the rocks that surround it have become the homeland of international sports climbing.

1. Municipal Casino

Today a convention and events centre, this originally was a place where, during the mid-19 century the nobility of Central Europe who had chosen Arco as their winter spa resort, met and whiled away the time. There were many notables who visited these gaming rooms and the town. One of the most famous is the Empress Elisabetta, or “Sissi”, who may have been in Arco in 1889 on the occasion of a trip to the southern shores of Lake Garda. The splendid veranda, added in 1900 together with the great ballroom, overlooks the health promenade and the bandstand. Note the globe and wind column which kept guests informed about the weather conditions.
2. Evangelic Church of the Trinity

Built in 1897 in the neo-gothic style to a plan by Hans Friecke, among other treasures, it has a roof made of glazed polychrome flat tiles. It bears witness to the presence of many visitors from the other side of the Alps who sojourned in Arco at the turn of the 20th century.
3. Public Gardens

Laid out in the 1870s to add to the charms of the newly established spa town, these gardens are living proof of the mildness of the climate in Arco and contain an extraordinary botanical heritage. Cedrus deodara is the keynote around which the English style garden was planted, with the objective of adding a touch of winter greenery in what then was the riviera of the Hapsburg Empire. On the side towards the church, there is a monument for the painter Giovanni Segantini, born in Arco on 15 January 1858.
4. Church of St. Anna

This is a reconstruction in the baroque style of an earlier church dedicated to Saint Peter which was built against the ancient city walls together with a hospital run by the Confraternity of the Flagellants. The painting in the sacristy is of considerable interest.
