Drena and its castle, a picture postcard view only a few steps from Lake Garda
Only a few kilometers from Lake Garda Trentino a place appears, kissed by the Mediterranean climate, so typical of our lake, and surrounded by a mountain landscape. It’s the lush Drena in the province of Trento, and its castle, which is a 12th-century medieval masterpiece, is its symbol.
Its woods rich in vegetation, mainly in chestnut trees, teem with fallen burrs during the autumn season, and the landscape turns into a sort of fairytale. The chestnut groves in Drena are centuries old, and their precious fruits, the Drena chestnuts (here they are called marroni, meaning big chestnuts) are celebrated every year over a big festival.
But the main sightseeing in Drena is undoubtedly its castle. Castel Drena is a medieval stronghold overlooking the Sarca Valley and the area known as le Marocche.
It towers imperious and impressive from a distance, becoming a view to admire and photograph for those who cross the area. Nowadays the castle hosts concerts, shows and art exhibitions, giving the visitors more than an opportunity to take in the sights.
North from Castel Drena, countless paths to tread by mountain bike or on foot wind up. These itineraries allow you to enjoy some proper relaxing moments, surrounded by the most thriving and lively nature, crossing a sculpture park until reaching Malga Campo, a serenity haven and typical rural environment.
For the outdoor lovers, one of the most appreciated via ferratas starts in Drena as well. The Castel Drena Via Ferrata, named “Rio Sallagoni”, is a venturous footpath climbing up an amazing gorge under the Castle. Some overhanging parts of the path leave you astonished and make you cross some unusual lush landscapes. One of the most evocative parts of the via ferrata is the crossing of a suspension bridge skirting a fairytale waterfall.
The history and culture lovers visiting Drena can’t miss the parish church of San Martino and the San Carlo Borromeo church, two wonderful signs of art and everlasting beauty that make Drena a place to rest and to be enjoyed during a long holiday discovering Lake Garda Trentino.
