An easy itinerary on the cycle path which leads from Mori, in Vallagarina, to Riva del Garda, on the northern shores of Lake Garda.

The Mori-Torbole sul Garda cycle path is a branch of the cycle path which goes from the Brennero to Verona, the “cycle path of the sun”(Ciclopista del Sole), the Italian part of a European project which aims to build a cycle path from the North Pole to Malta.

Leaving the main route, the Mori-Lake Garda cycle path gives cyclists coming from the north easy access to the shores of the lake. From Vallagarina you climb to the San Giovanni Pass and then head down again towards the Garda basin to arrive at Torbole sul Garda. The change in the landscape as you go from one valley to the other, from the vineyards of the Valle dell'Adige to the nature reserve of Lake Loppio and then the northern shore of Lake Garda surrounded by sheer mountains.

The cycle path does not present any particular difficulties – apart from the ascent to the San Giovanni Pass (287 m) and is suitable for anyone who is used to getting around by bicycle.

Further information and useful links
  • In the stretch along the shores of Lake Loppio, the cycle track runs on what was once the MAR, the Mori-Arco-Riva railway, which was active from 1891 to 1936. In particular, beyond the woods on the lake shore, you come to a high wall which once supported the railway track.

Suggestions
The stretch of cycle path from Riva del Garda and Torbole, with the stretch hanging out over the water, is one of the absolute musts in Garda Trentino
Safety guidelines

  1. Give your bike a regular checkup, especially if you've had it for years.
  2. Be seen: you must wear a high vis jacket (or sash) in tunnels and on country roads after sunset.
  3. Always wear your helmet.
  4. Make sure your front and rear lights are working.
  5. Put out your arm to give advance warning of your intention to change position and before you do anything, check there are no vehicles coming up behind you.
  6. Don't use headphones or your mobile phone handsfree kit: you need all your concentration on the road!
  7. Obey the road signs: stop at traffic lights and don't ride on the wrong side of the road.
  8. If you are cycling in a group, always go in single file.
  9. You've got a bell: use it to let pedestrians know you're there. Don't ride on footpaths. If you have to then get off and push your bike.
  10. If there are cycle paths use them. It's your safety that's at stake and the rules of the road say you must.

Notes:

  • Between the San Giovanni pass and Torbole, in the afternoon, you need to watch out for the Ora, a regular wind which blows quite strong from the south.
  • The cycle pathe in Trentino are usually closed by the local authorities from November, 15th to April, 15th. Exceptions are the cycle paths along the River Adige and in the Basso Sarca/Garda Trentino, where cycling is prohibited only in case of ice or during a snowfall

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

Directions

This itinerary starts directly on the Adige Valley trail, on the Rovereto stretch which runs along the canal, just below the ENEL electricity company Mori dam. You are in open countryside and the road for mixed traffic heads up the side of the hill towards the hamlets Seghe Ultime and Seghe Prime.

After about 700 metres you come to the main road SS240, turn left onto the road leading into the little cluster of houses along the main road and follow the road signs until you come to the protected cycle path which runs around Mori sports grounds.

Take the underpass beneath the main road and then there is a brief uphill section which soon takes you into the residential area of Mori where there is a cycle path which leads towards the town centre. On the other side of Mori, signposts will lead you back to the main road SS240 and a junction which you must cross with great care because of the heavy traffic in this area.

On the other side of the main road, a short stretch of mixed traffic takes you to the turn-off for Sano; here you turn right onto the cycle path which runs along the canal Rio Cameras, through an area of vineyards and  fields of maize. Another three kilometres and you come to the little hamlet of Loppio.

Continue on down the cycle path which now runs alongside the SS240, the valley narrows between the mountains and you begin to see the typical vegetation of the boggy area around Loppio. The cycle path runs along the lake shore, heading into a wood after which it starts to rise again. Just a few hundred metres, all uphill, and you come to the San Giovanni pass, which marks the watershed between the two valleys.

The track heads into the valley with a trail that is really fun, a series of uphill and downhill runs, twists and bends, taking you down to the Nago plain below, a natural balcony overlooking Lake Garda.

The cycle path finishes at a picnic area in the shade of acacia trees; from here on you cycle towards Nago on narrow country roads winding through the vineyards and vegetable patches. On the other side of Nago, turn left onto the old mixed traffic road which goes down to Torbole, a long straight downhill run which takes you to the little town square.

Now you are in the centre of Torbole, head towards Riva del Garda, following the paved track constructed along the beaches on the lake shore where you are advised to get off and push your bike, especially in summertime, because of the crowds of tourists.

At the mouth of the River Sarca, take the walkway to the other side and then head northwards on the “Torbole-Sarca” cycle path which takes you through the various towns and villages in the valley until you come to Sarche.

Now head in the direction of Riva del Garda along the panoramic overhanging cycle path built at the side of the road in the stretch between the two tunnels until you finally come to San Nicolò harbour. Pass the harbour and go back on the cycle path for about 1 km along the shore until you come to the point where the Albola and Varone streams meet at Punta Lido.

Here the trail splits in two: one leaves the lake and goes upstream along the Varone for about 1 km, the other follows the lake shore for about 300 m, bringing you to the public park of Riva del Garda with the massive fortress the “Rocca” surrounded by its moat.

The next stretch winds along the Varone stream as far as the town of Varone.
