A hike along the Austro-Hungarian defensive line, the imposing fortifications built around the turn of the century to defend the southern border
There is no doubt about the strategic importance of Garda Trentino for the Austro-Hungarian Empire given the number and size of the fortifications above the shores of Lake Garda and that Segrom is part of it. Barracks, trenches, tunnels and artillery positions testify to the complexity of this system and constitute a unique historical background for a hike.
Here the path largely coincides with a military road built by the Austro-Hungarian army starting in 1880, when work began to strengthen defenses along the Italian border. The fortifications along the Segrom ridge date back to the same period and are connected by trenches with the fortress of Malga Zures, a considerable line of resistance in case of loss of the forward position.

The first part follows the Peace Path, a long-distance route that connects the most important places of the front lines during the Great War in Trentino.
Safety advice
This information is subject to unavoidable changes, so no indication is absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid inaccurate or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason, we disclaim all responsibility for changes the user might encounter. In any case, it is advisable to check environmental and weather conditions before setting out.
From San Giuseppe to Nago, follow the Peace Path (SAT 601) up to Malga Zures, climbing the Segrom ridge. Along the entire path, you will encounter defensive positions built by the Austro-Hungarian army to protect the southern border. The artillery positions offer stunning views of the entire upper lake. For the descent, follow again the mule track running beneath the Segrom Wall (see hiking map no. 23), one of the most famous sport climbing walls in the world.
The main locations of Garda Trentino - Riva del Garda, Arco, Torbole sul Garda, Nago – are connected by several urban and interurban bus lines that will take you to the starting point of the routes or very close to it.
It is also possible to reach Riva del Garda and Torbole sul Garda by public ferry service.
Follow the signs from Nago for the Baldo road or "Baldo road" to the parking lot near the start of the SAT 601 path.
Free parking at Traole in Nago.
You need to wear the right clothing and bring appropriate gear when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short and easy hikes, make sure to bring everything necessary to avoid problems if things take an unexpected turn, for example if a thunderstorm breaks out or you suddenly lose energy.
What should you bring when you go hiking?
Your backpack (a capacity of 25/30L is sufficient for a day trip) should contain:
Make sure to wear footwear suitable for the trail and the season. The ground can become rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, a rock slab or a steep path can be dangerous unless you wear proper footwear.
And finally... don't forget the camera! You will need it to capture the breathtaking views you will encounter all over Garda Trentino. And if you want, you can share your memories with us using #GardaTrentino.

The first stretch of the path walking uphill from Nago is closed for maintenance of the Segrom climbing area. To reach Monte Altissimo you need to follow the asphalt road (Strada del Monte Baldo) to Malga Zures and take the SAT 601 path from there.
