This is a short trail which joins the medieval village of Canale, counted among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, to Calvola, a little hamlet overlooking Lake Garda

The medieval village of Canale is counted among the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. It is a concentrated mixture of history, art and tradition, preserved virtually intact to the present day.  Its solid stone houses, vaulted archways, underpasses, narrow laneways and wooden balconies are the perfect illustration of the rural architecture of the area. Here you will find the "Casa degli Artisti": opened in the 1960s, it offers hospitality to artists in search of inspiration, who in return, donated one of their works. Today, the Casa hosts exhibitions, workshop and all manner of activities open to the public.

Further information and useful links
  • There are two events organised in Canale every year which are a must for anyone in the area. In mid-August, there is the “Rustico Medioevo” festival: one of the top medieval-themed events in Trentino, for an entire week, the streets of the village are filled with performances, local food and wine, and medieval music. In winter, Canale hosts the traditional Christmas Market. Here the stalls are set up in the old stables and cellars of the traditional stone houses and sell only typical Trento produce and handicrafts. For further information: www.gardatrenino.it/events

Safety guidelines

The Hidden Treasures itineraries were designed in order to give visitors a chance to get to know places in Garda Trentino that are off the beaten track. For this reason, the signposting is not always in the same style and sometimes missing altogether. We therefore recommend you to take a good map with you on these excursions. And then bear in mind your general reference points: Lake Garda = South, Monte Stivo = East, Rocchetta = West, Arco Castle = North.

The telephone number for the emergency services is 112.

The information on this chart is subject to inevitable variations, so this means that none of the indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case,  the hiker is advised to check the conditions of the places, environment and weather before setting out.

Immediately on the right you fill find Casa Artisti, and the village square just beyond. Keep right and continue until you reach the Agricultural Tools Museum. Leaving the village, continue towards Calvola. Just outside Canale, a short detour on the right leads to the monument to the "Strambevie", depicting four villagers engaged in a neighborhood meeting. The monument celebrates the “Vicinia”: an institution of medieval origin still active in Ville del Monte. From here continue along the road in the direction of Calvola, keep going straight on until you reach the fountain near the church of S. Giovanni.
