This stage takes you to Monte Baldo, renowned for the exceptional variety of its flora (it is therefore known as the "Garden of Europe") and for the incredible views over Lake Garda.
This stage is the last uphill section of the Garda Trek circuit. The destination is Monte Altissimo, one of the most loved and frequented mountains of Lake Garda.
The stage is long and challenging, with over 1800 meters of elevation gain. There are no refreshment points along the route, so make sure to bring enough water and food with you.
The SAT 601 trail, along which much of the trekking takes place, is part of the Peace Trail, a long-distance route connecting the main points along the Great War front in Trentino. Malga Zures, encountered along the way, hides a complex system of 4 kilometers of underground fortifications and was the scene of fierce clashes.
As the trail climbs, it enters the Local Natural Reserve Monte Baldo, a protected area characterized by exceptional biodiversity. Since the 15th century, Monte Baldo has been famous for its extraordinary variety of plants and flowers and is known as the “Garden of Europe”.
It is said that from the top of Monte Altissimo, on clear days, you can even see the Venetian lagoon!

The route starts in Nago, crossing the town and following signs for Monte Baldo and the SAT 601 trail. It climbs uphill to a point where you can take the SAT 601 to Malga Zures. From here, follow the SAT 601 to Monte Varagna. Cross an open flat area and then climb among the dwarf pines. After a straight section, ascend a slope along a series of hairpin bends until you reach the Rifugio Altissimo Damiano Chiesa. From the summit behind the refuge, you have a spectacular view over Garda Trentino and the entire lake.
The main towns of Garda Trentino - Riva del Garda, Arco, Torbole sul Garda, Nago – are connected by various urban and interurban bus lines that will take you to the starting point of the routes or nearby.

You need to wear the right clothing and bring appropriate equipment when trekking in the mountains. Even on relatively short and easy hikes, make sure to take everything necessary so as not to get into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example if a storm breaks out or you experience a sudden drop in energy.
What should you bring when you go hiking?
Your backpack (for a day trip a capacity of 25/30L should be fine) should contain:
Make sure to wear footwear suitable for the trail and the season. The terrain can become hard and rocky and a pair of trekking boots will protect you from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, a rocky slab or a steep trail can be dangerous if you do not wear appropriate footwear.
And finally... don’t forget to bring your camera! You’ll need it to capture the stunning landscapes you will encounter throughout Garda Trentino. And if you want, you can share your memories with us by using #GardaTrentino.

The first stretch of the path walking uphill from Nago is closed for maintenance of the Segrom climbing area. To reach Monte Altissimo you need to follow the asphalt road (Strada del Monte Baldo) to Malga Zures and take the SAT 601 path from there.
