A hike from Dro to the mountain village of Braila, along the ancient path that crosses the slopes of Monte Varino with a spectacular view of the Sarca Valley.
In Dro everyone knows the story of the elementary school teacher Ketty Bombardelli, who at the beginning of the twentieth century taught in town but lived in the isolated village of Braila. The only way to get from one to the other was the steep mountain trail on Monte Varino, and the teacher walked that trail every day to get to school. It is said that every evening upon her return her husband would come to meet her to help her on the steepest part, carrying her on his shoulders in his gerla – the traditional wicker basket used to carry goods on mountain trails.
This route retraces the teacher’s footsteps along the first part of the SAT 667 trail, the "Teacher's Path", and is marked with the usual red and white markings.
Braila retains all the atmosphere of a mountain village with its stone houses clustered together, surrounded by woods and with scenic views over the Sarca Valley.

From the Teacher's Path you can enjoy spectacular views of the Sarca Valley.
Once you arrive at Braila, the Open Air Gallery is nearby: a section of forest transformed into an open-air art gallery. There are several installations among rocks, trees, and clearings and two different trails to appreciate them.

From Piazza Repubblica in Dro, follow the signs for the Sarca cycle path towards Pietramurata (in this order: via Molini, via Degasperi, via Costa, via Gramsci), then continue for about one kilometer until you reach the junction after the underpass beneath the main road near the bike grill. Here turn left and in a few minutes you will reach the main road connecting Drena with Dro. Stay on the right side of the road and head south until you reach the third side road on your left. Cross the main road carefully and follow the signs for the "Teacher's Path" to reach Monte Varino, where you will take the SAT 667 trail for an approximately one-hour hike. After passing the equipped section, you will reach an asphalt road where you will continue climbing northwards until the Braila church and the village itself. On the other side of the village, continue descending to the left – ignoring the sign indicating to continue on trail 665 towards Arco – until you return to the point where you started the climb. From here you can return to Dro retracing the original path. Caution: on the return, use the red/white markers as reference and not the traces of the old blue/white markers which are still visible in various points.

You need to wear appropriate clothing and bring the right equipment when you go hiking in the mountains. Even on relatively short and simple outings, make sure to carry everything necessary to avoid problems if the situation suddenly changes, for example in case of a thunderstorm or sudden energy drop.
What should you bring when you go on a hike?
Your backpack (25/30L capacity is fine for a day) should contain:
Make sure to wear footwear suitable for the trail and the season. The terrain can become rough and rocky, and a pair of hiking boots will protect your ankles from sprains. When wet, a grassy slope, rock slab, or steep path can become dangerous if the right footwear is not worn.
And finally... don’t forget to bring your camera! It will serve to capture the breathtaking views you will find everywhere in Garda Trentino. And if you wish, you can share your memories with us using the hashtag #GardaTrentino.
