A short loop for everyone around one of the pearls of Trentino: Lake Tenno. Famous for its colour, it’s the ideal destination in every season.

This route is suited to a day of leisure and relaxation where a swim in the clear waters of Lake Tenno can be enjoyed. Or perhaps as a complement to one of the other route itineraries; 736, 737 or 739.
Much of the initial climbing develops along the main road that leads to the Ballino Pass. Despite the fact that the route starts out on the asphalt, the lake’s beauty can still be admired from afar. The gradients throughout vary but never exceed 10%. Then again, the climb to reach the forest in the Castil area requires a good effort! From here, you continue on an easy forest road through the woods, until you reach the beautiful Lake of Tenno. The descent has no particular difficulties except the terrain is sometimes a bit loose and there are two barriers to overcome on the sides of the road.

Further information and useful links
  • On hot summer days it is a pleasure to swim in the clear, fresh waters of Lake Tenno. However it is important to respect the signs indicating the prohibition of cycling on the shoreline.
With a small detour, you can also easily reach Canale di Tenno: a quaint, medieval village considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.
  • This is an official route of the Garda Trentino Provincial Network of MTB routes, regularly maintained and accompanied by specific signage

Directions

The route starts from the car park near to Lake Tenno. From here follow the main road towards Ballino Pass. When you reach the church at the village of Ballino, turn right following the route directions. Continue uphill towards the village of Castil: facing the most challenging climb of the route. The signposts for route 738 are always clear, and while coasting along the other side of the loop, the lake starts to become visible.

Shortly after passing it, staying on the easy forest path, you’ll reach an old road that leads to the village of 'Canale di Tenno’. If the day is clear from here you can see the mighty Lake Garda - to the right and the village, straight ahead. At the first junction turn right and, after a short gravel road, utilising the route signs, return to the starting point on a quiet side road.

public transportation

Tenno is served by the rural bus line Riva - Tenno - Fiavé - Ponte Arche (For up-to-the-minute information on timetables and routes)

N.B. Buses are not very frequent!

Also, from June to September the BiciBusTrek service is active with a stop at the car park from where this itinerary departs.

How to get there

The lake of Tenno is about 12 km from Riva del Garda and can be reached by taking the SS241

Getting to northern lake Garda / Garda Trentino

Where to park
Paid parking is available at the lake of Tenno. The nearest free parking is in Ville del Monte (about 1.5 km from the lake).

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a drop your energy levels. The unexpected things also make up a part of the fun!

Remember to throughly evaluate the type of route you plan to do, the locations you plan to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

  • An adequate water supply according to your needs (considering temperature, possibility of refuelling and duration of the route)
  • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)
  • Waterproof / Windproof jacket.
  • A spare top / spare socks. (Descending in a sweaty garment, will make you cold)

  • Map or GPS device
  • Bike lights: best placed on your helmet or handlebars. (It is always best to be prepared)
  • Bike repair kit for punctures and mechanical breakdowns
