Sleeping in a mountain hut is always an experience. This hike includes an overnight stay in the mountains followed by a panoramic hike back to Riva del Garda
First walk through holm oak woods and then beech and fir until you reach the alpine hut Rifugio Pernici, renowned for its homemade local specialties. Sleep at the refuge after a delicious dinner. Watch the dawn creeping into the sky outlining the peaks one by one.
Then descend towards the lake along the ridge that divides Garda Trentino from the Ledro Valley enjoying a series of breathtaking views from the Brenta Dolomites to the lakes of Garda and Ledro, while descending along the steep rock above Riva del Garda.
On the second day, the route follows the Peace Trail, a long-distance path that crosses the most important sites of the front during the Great War. Around Rifugio Pernici, originally built as an officers' mess, and up to Bocca Saval there are numerous remains of trenches and barricades dating back to the war. This was indeed the Austro-Hungarian defense line.

Attention! Along this route there is a short via ferrata section: you must be equipped with a via ferrata set, helmet and harness. There are also some particularly exposed sections along SAT 413 that must be tackled maintaining a safe pace. The length of the route and the above-mentioned difficulties make it suitable only for experienced hikers with a good level of physical fitness.
From the center of Riva, take the path that leads to the Bastion and then follow the signs for the SAT 402 route that leads to the village of Campi, continues to the alpine hut Grassi, and finally climbs up to the Nino Pernici Refuge. Here you should plan to stay overnight.
For the descent, take the panoramic path SAT 413 that leads to Bocca Giumella, passing along Bocca Saval and Campigolo. After the pass, take the path SAT 417, which climbs to the summit of Cima Valdes and then reconnects with the SAT 413 up to Bochet dei Concoli. Then descend on the steep path SAT 404 towards Santa Barbara: right next to the church you will find a vertical ladder that must only be descended while securely attached. From here continue to the small church and proceed back to Riva del Garda.
The main towns of Garda Trentino - Riva del Garda, Arco, Torbole sul Garda, Nago – are connected by various urban and suburban lines that will take you to the starting point of the routes or nearby.
You can also reach Riva del Garda and Torbole sul Garda with public ferry service.
Free parking at the old hospital (Via Rosmini).
Paid parking: Terme Romane (Viale Roma), Old station (Largo Medaglie d’Oro), Ex-agraria (Via Lutti).
You need to wear the right clothing and carry the appropriate equipment when hiking in the mountains. Even during relatively short and easy outings, make sure to take everything necessary to avoid problems if things take an unexpected turn, for example if a storm breaks out or you experience a sudden drop in energy.
What should you bring when you go hiking?
Your backpack (for a day hike, a capacity of 25/30L should suffice) should contain:
Make sure to wear the right footwear for the trail and the season. The terrain can become rough and rocky and a pair of boots will protect you from sprains. If the terrain is wet, a grassy slope, a rock slab or a steep path can be dangerous unless you wear appropriate footwear.
And finally... don’t forget the camera! You will need it to capture the stunning views you will encounter all over Garda Trentino. And if you want, you can share your memories with us on #GardaTrentino.
