Hidden Treasures - Itinerary The Teacher's Trail

A path that at the dawn of the twentieth century the teacher Ketty Tantardini Bombardelli took every day to go teach at the elementary school in the small town of Braila, in the mountains near Dro. The adventurous trail runs at the foot of cliffs marked by glaciers, skirts a ruined house near the rock wall, winds through the boulders of the Varino to end in Braila.
The trail, rated for experienced hikers (EE) is the most challenging among those proposed in this selection.

Start: Piazza Repubblica, Dro
End: Piazza Repubblica, Dro
Length: 2.5 km.Duration: 1h 30' to 2 h.
Altitude difference: 365 m.
Difficulty: hard

Notes: Appropriate clothing and water supply are recommended. A brief exposed section on the rocky side of the Varino is equipped with a metal rope - children might find a basic iron ladder set to be helpful here.

1. The Teacher / Start

In the early '900 Mrs. Ketty Bombardelli, born Tantardini, was a teacher at the elementary school in Dro, but lived with her husband in the small hamlet of Braila, about 500 meters above Dro. Every morning, she went to Dro along the steep path down the cliffside under Braila, and every evening she went back up. It is said that her husband, a farmer in Braila, used to come down some of the way to help her overcome the very steep final part of the path.
From Piazza Repubblica we walk through Dro heading north (first along Via Molini, then via De Gasperi) to meet the cycle path, which we follow for a short distance. A few hundred meters after passing under the state road through the underpass, we reach a fork where we take a turn to the right and continue in the direction of Maso Trenti.
2. Junction at Maso Trenti

Shortly after leaving the cycle path we reach the main road between Dro and Drena. We walk along that road a few hundred meters in the direction of Dro, until we see the entrance to a country road on the left side of the road (near a red gate) where we find the signpost for trail 667 SAT.
3. Trail 667 SAT

The first easy section of trail 667 ("Pè di Lavino") passes through the fields of Dro and heads to the foot of the mountain Varino. Typical products of Dro which we can see all around here are apples and plums. After the bridge over the streamlet Rio Sallagoni we reach the woods and follow the signs for the “Sentiero della Maestra” north. The second part in the woods is considerably more challenging (the path as a whole is considered EE, “expert hikers”).
It rises along the side of the Varino for more or less one kilometer. White and red marks on trees indicate the correct path to take.
4. Equipped Path

A short but steep rocky slope shortly before the end of the path has been secured with a metal rope and steps. This is a recent addition: at the time when the springly teacher passed through here daily, it did not exist: legend has it, that her husband always came to meet her halfway and carried her up the steep slope inside a large basket, a  “gerla”, normally used to carry goods – luckily for him, the lady was quite small.
